COVID-19 and SBA Operations

Updated 13 June 2020

In light of the dangers posed by the Coronavirus disease 2019 ("COVID-19"), and in order to comply with the directives contained in Executive Order No. 143 issued by the Governor of the State of New Jersey on May 14, 2020, South Beach Association has instituted some new rules and procedures relating to our operations for this summer.

As South Beach is committed to maintaining a safe environment for our members and their guests, we ask that you please do your best to adhere to these requirements, and to make reasonable efforts to ensure that each of your family members and guests do the same. Please note that these rules and procedures may need to be revised during the summer based upon further directives that may be forthcoming from the State of New Jersey, the Borough of Mantoloking or other appropriate governmental authorities. If changes do occur, we will do our best to communicate those promptly to our membership.

1.  First and foremost, members and guests SHOULD NOT come to the beach if they:

  • Have been exposed to, or diagnosed with, COVID-19, unless and until they have

been cleared by appropriate medical personnel as no longer being capable of

    transmitting the virus

  • Are experiencing flu like symptoms, such as fever, cough or shortness of breath

2.  Social Distancing IS REQUIRED at all times (excluding immediate family members, household members, caretakers and romantic partners). This includes:

  • STAYING 6 FEET APART from others at all times, whenever practicable

  • WEARING A MASK when accessing the beach, including while using the walkway

and the areas around the guard shack. Masks do not have to be worn on the beach once you are separated from others, and should not be worn while swimming

  • Avoiding groups of other beachgoers (excluding related family or household members)

3.  South Beach reserves the right to control access or density on the beach in order to maintain proper social distancing; however, in the event that such an unlikely situation shall occur, members will be encouraged to walk north or south of the flags outlining South Beach in order to find a less crowded spot. When accessing the water, however, please make an effort to swim between the flags (particularly those with younger children) so that you remain visible at all times to our lifeguards

4. In light of the recent determination by the Federal Center for Disease Control that transmission of COVID-19 to persons from surfaces contaminated by the virus has not been documented, South Beach has elected to continue to allow members to access some, but not all, of the amenities located at the guard shack; although we ask that members be very mindful of social distancing while doing so. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THE USE OF THESE AMENITIES IS AT YOUR RISK.

  • Continuing with our past practices, the bathroom is to remain locked at all times, but may be accessed by members and their guests with permission from a lifeguard

  • The rinsing stations may be accessed by only ONE person at a time, with the exception that a parent or other family member may assist a young child or another in need when utilizing that area. The rinsing stations are for rinsing off sand and salt water only, and are not to be used as a storage area for chairs or other items

  • The use of the water fountain WILL BE PROHIBITED at this time. The kitchenette, refrigerator and the grill will also NOT BE AVAILABLE for use.

  • As a result of the difficulty in maintaining social distancing near the beach chair storage area within the guard shack and the chair storage boxes located outside of the shack during peak times, South Beach STRONGLY DISCOURAGES members from utilizing those facilities, particularly by those who live within walking distance of South Beach. For those who need to utilize these facilities, please allow others within the area to clear before proceeding to the storage areas. In addition, please be cognizant of our rule that each family is restricted to storing not more than 2 chairs at any one time, and that each chair must be clearly marked with a family name for identification. Surfboards are NOT TO BE STORED in these areas or anywhere else on the South Beach property

  • The seating area on the second level of the guard shack and our new dune deck (once completed) may only be used by members and guests as long as strict social distancing is maintained at all times. Members using the second level of the guard shack must ensure that trash does not blow off the deck, that trash is removed, and that the area is left neat and clean

5.  At this time, we have made the decision to cancel all of our traditional social events for this summer. Thus, there will not be an opening gathering on the evening of Saturday, June 27, or our family-favorite sand castle building contest on July 4th weekend.

6.  No organized group recreational activities will be permitted on the beach (such as volleyball)

7.  As a reminder, there is no food allowed on the beach. Non-alcoholic beverages in non-disposable containers are permitted (e.g., canned beverages are prohibited). Persons eating on the beach will be asked to leave. Exceptions will be made for young children eating a light snack

8.  Please be advised that our lifeguards will have guidelines that they will be following which are in alignment with other beaches and consistent with the recommendations of the Life Guard Association. Please direct any questions that you may have with regard to those guidelines to our Head Guard, Rory Wagner.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR COMPLIANCE WITH THESE RULES AND PROCEDURES.
